It’s the perfect Saturday afternoon: your young grandkids are coming for the day while their parents do errands. It’s been weeks since you’ve seen them, with everything going on, and you can’t wait to get your hands on their cute little cheeks.

You’re worried about just one thing: keeping them off their screens.

Screen time rules are tough to enforce, yes, but the experts say we have to keep trying! Healthy screen time habits (and limits) result in fewer family arguments, less stress, more physical activity, and a longer attention span.

And quality Grandma-time, of course!

Here’s a tip from your friends at FIORA: have some screen-alternatives at the ready. Like… crafts! A fun, colorful, project that sparks imagination is a great way to spend time together. We happen to know a number of low cost, age-appropriate crafts using our empty FIORA toilet paper rolls.

FIORA® TOILET ROLL MONSTERS!
Ages 3 to 6

What makes this craft fun:

No two monsters are alike so there’s no “wrong” way to do it! Perfect for younger children.

Supplies Needed:

Empty FIORA® toilet paper rolls
A selection of colored papers (wrapping paper, lightweight construction paper, origami paper, newspaper, or even lined school paper)
Non-toxic paints (optional)
Stick-on “googly eyes,” pipe cleaners, ribbon, feathers, and any other decoration you can think of
Glue stick
Scissors

How to do it:

Color the rolls with paper (or paint).
Cut the top of the rolls in the shapes (pointy, fringed, etc.)
Attach the googly eyes–some monsters might have 5!
Put on pipe cleaner arms.
Add teeth and other decorations.

THE FIORA® TOILET PAPER ROLL BIRD FEEDER
Ages 6 to 10

What makes this craft fun:

Seeing birds enjoy a snack, when you’re done, is a satisfying reward!

Supplies Needed:

FIORA® toilet paper roll
Birdseed
Peanut butter
String, twine, or yarn

How to do it:

Spread birdseed onto a plate or tray; set aside.
Take your empty FIORA® toilet paper roll and spread peanut butter all over it. Use a spoon, a popsicle stick–or even your fingers!
Take the peanut butter-covered toilet paper roll, and roll it back and forth across the birdseed until it is fully covered.
Slip a string through the toilet paper roll, tie a bow, and hang it on a tree.

FIORA® TOILET PAPER ROLL DESK ORGANIZER
Ages 8 and Up

Why this craft is fun:

These colorful, DIY organizer caddies can be personalized just the way each kid likes it.

Supplies Needed:

4-8 empty FIORA® toilet paper rolls (paper towel rolls work too!)
A piece of flat cardboard for the base
A selection of colored papers (wrapping paper, tissue paper, origami paper, newspaper, or even lined school paper)
Glue stick
Super glue
Ribbons, sequins, lace, twine, stickers–or any decorations you have handy

How:

First, decide if you’d like your rolls to be all the same height or varying heights. If the latter, an adult should first cut the toilet paper rolls.
Choose your papers! Then trim the paper to be the same height as the rolls.
Cover your cardboard base in paper, too.
Using a glue stick, first cover the roll in glue, and then roll your paper around each roll.
It’s optional, but you may want to put a “trim” at the top of each roll for a finished look.
Glue your rolls with the super glue onto the covered cardboard.
Decorate!
